Anderson, Lindsay
   b. 1923, Bangalore (India); d. 1994, Dordogne (France)
   Film-maker
   Anderson’s early career as an essayist and an exponent of experimental ‘free cinema’ developed a unique style which reflected upon the process of film making and the role of the individual in initiating social change. His first feature film, This Sporting Life (1963), was an intense drama of northern English working-class life. This was followed by a thematically linked trilogy. If (1969) offered the metaphor of the public school as the state of the nation. The sequel, O Lucky Man (1972), considered big business, civic corruption and the perversion of science and religion, but resisted easy conclusions. Britannia Hospital (1982) was less successful, using the ailing NHS as an analogue for a moribund Britain.
